Transplanting
Seedlings
When the soil
is prepared and balanced, and the seedlings have
been hardened off, it's time for transplanting.
Choose a cloudy day or if the day is sunny wait until
late afternoon or evening.
The seedlings
will wilt and be under even more stress from the
sun if done in the middle of the day or on a
hot, sunny day.
Thoroughly soak the seed trays with water before
removing the seedlings. |

Loosen the area around
the roots by using a gardening label or spoon.
Gently push the seedling out of the cell from
the bottom into your hand. Try to avoid holding
by the tender stem or leaves.
Make a hole in the
soil deeper and wider than the roots will need.
Set the seedling in the soil immediately, so as
not to overexpose the roots to the drying air
and sun.
Cover the roots and tamp down the soil
surrounding the plant.
Water generously. It is
almost impossible to over water at this stage.
Constant watering is crucial for the first 7-10
days after transplanting because seedlings don't
have roots that are deep enough to seek out
hidden moisture in the soil.
Place label markers
at the end of each row. It will help you to
distinguish your plants from any weeds.
